What moves the price
- Prep condition — patching, sanding and priming can be more than half the labour.
- Ceiling height and stairwells — anything needing scaffolding adds a day.
- Colour change — going dark to light, or covering a deep colour, means an extra coat.
- Paint grade — premium paints cost more per gallon but cover in fewer coats and last longer on trim.
- Occupied vs. empty home — masking, moving furniture and daily cleanup add hours.

Asbestos in older textured ceilings and compounds
Homes built before about 1990 may have asbestos in popcorn ceilings and drywall joint compound. Ontario Regulation 278/05 governs how it must be handled — test before sanding or scraping.
Lead paint in pre-1980 homes
Sanding lead paint releases dust that is hazardous, particularly with young children in the home. Ask how the crew contains and cleans up.
Condo and HOA rules
Many GTA condos require a certificate of insurance from the contractor and restrict work hours and elevator use. Check before booking a date.
Ventilation and VOCs
Low-VOC and zero-VOC paints are standard now and worth specifying if anyone in the home is sensitive.
Before you hire: a quick checklist
- Ask for the business name, address and a phone number that isn't just a cell.
- Confirm general liability insurance and a valid WSIB clearance certificate before work starts.
- Get the scope, materials, timeline and total price in writing — not a number over the phone.
- Be cautious with large upfront deposits. In Ontario a deposit of roughly 10–30% is normal; full payment up front is not.
- Ask who is actually doing the work — the person quoting, an employee, or a subcontractor.
- Hold back final payment until the work passes any required inspection and you've seen it finished.
- Confirm in writing how many coats, which product line, and what prep is included.
- Ask whether they'll leave labelled touch-up paint at the end.

How much does it cost to paint a house interior in Toronto?
Most GTA homeowners pay $4,000–$9,000 to paint the interior of a 1,500–2,000 sq ft home including walls, ceilings and trim, or roughly $400–$900 per average room for walls only.
How long does interior painting take?
A single room is usually a day. A full interior with trim and ceilings on a typical GTA home runs 4–8 working days depending on crew size and prep.
Do painters move the furniture?
Most will move and cover furniture within the room but won't relocate heavy items, electronics or artwork. Clarify this in the quote so nothing stalls on day one.
How many coats of paint do I need?
Two is standard. Expect three when going from a dark colour to a light one, covering stains, or painting over bare drywall without a primer coat.
What's the best time of year for exterior painting in Ontario?
Late May through early October. Most exterior paints need surface temperatures consistently above about 10°C and dry conditions to cure properly.
Is cabinet painting worth it versus replacing?
If the boxes and hinges are sound, refinishing typically costs a third or less of new cabinets. If the layout is wrong or the boxes are failing, put the money into replacement.
