- Access — a backyard reachable only through the house or a narrow side yard means wheelbarrows instead of machines.
- Excavation and disposal volume, which is the hidden bulk of hardscape pricing.

Ontario One Call is mandatory before digging
Locate requests are free and required by law before any excavation. This applies to fence posts and deck footings too.
Tree removal by-laws
Toronto and many GTA municipalities require a permit to remove or injure trees above a set trunk diameter, including on private property. Fines are substantial.
Driveway, curb cut and front-yard parking
Widening a driveway or adding a curb cut requires municipal approval, and many cities cap how much of a front yard can be paved.
Retaining walls and grading
Walls above roughly 1 m typically need a building permit and engineered drawings, and lot grading changes may require approval so you don't push water onto a neighbour.
Before you hire: a quick checklist
- Ask for the business name, address and a phone number that isn't just a cell.
- Confirm general liability insurance and a valid WSIB clearance certificate before work starts.
- Get the scope, materials, timeline and total price in writing — not a number over the phone.
- Be cautious with large upfront deposits. In Ontario a deposit of roughly 10–30% is normal; full payment up front is not.
- Ask who is actually doing the work — the person quoting, an employee, or a subcontractor.
- Hold back final payment until the work passes any required inspection and you've seen it finished.
- Ask for the base depth and compaction method in writing on any interlock or hardscape quote.
- Confirm the locate request has been filed with Ontario One Call before digging starts.
